Early Experiences & Their Longterm Impact

How Prenatal Development Shapes Later SEL

Prenatal health directly affects brain development and stress regulation systems. Exposure to chronic maternal stress, substance use, or poor prenatal nutrition can alter cortisol pathways, which later influence a child’s ability to manage emotions, handle stress, and form relationships in adolescence.

Impact of Early Childhood Experiences

Early relationships and experiences build the architecture of the brain. Warm, responsive caregiving promotes secure attachment, empathy, emotional awareness, and healthy coping skills. In contrast, early instability or lack of emotional support increases the risk for anxiety, low regulation, and relationship challenges in adolescence.
